Karl Denson's Tiny Universe  7:45 - 9:00pm

• Website

For nearly three decades, legendary saxophonist Karl Denson has been getting crowds around the world out on the dance floor. Approaching iconic status, Denson has moved bodies and minds dating back to his earliest years with Lenny Kravitz's band through his ongoing tenure as a founding member of seminal boogaloo revivalists The Greyboy Allstars and his current roll as a member of San Diego dub rockers Slightly Stoopid. Nowhere, however, is this more apparent than with his band, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Touring relentlessly for the past 15 years and leaving a massive audience in his wake, fans know that when KDTU is in town a dance party will ensue.

Karl and his band are back on the road for a multi-city tour in support of their latest studio album, New Ammo, an infectious 13-track collection, and Denson’s debut release on Slightly Stoopid's record label, Stoopid Records. Alongside Denson originals like the title track and "Everybody Knows That," which have become fan favorites from his live sets, KDTU offers up searing versions of "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, "Hang Me Up To Dry" by Cold War Kids and "Sure Shot" by The Beastie Boys. The first single "My Baby," features Nicki Bluhm on vocals.

In Denson's own words: "We’ve finally figured out how to capture in the studio what the Tiny Universe does live. We move around a lot musically, but this record reflects who we are as a band and where we’re headed with our music."

Soul Rebels Brass Band   4:15 - 5:00pm

• Website

The SOUL REBELS formed when Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, originally members of New Orleans’ iconic Dejean’s Young Olympia Brass Band, decided they wanted to play the new, exciting music they were hearing on the radio while respecting the tradition they loved. Both New Orleans natives, the pair was steeped in the fundamentals of New Orleans jazz, but inevitably, contemporary styles of music began to seep into their psyches. While LeBlanc attended the famed St. Augustine High School, Moss went to Lil’ Wayne’s alma mater McMain High School, and paraded alongside soon-to-be Cash Money Records CEO Ronald “Slim” Williams in the school’s marching band. New sounds were all around and they found them as exciting as the horn-combo style featured in jazz funerals since the turn of the Twentieth Century.

Trouble in the Wind  2:00 - 2:45pm

Trouble in the Wind has been labeled as folk, Americana, alternative, country, surf rock …etc but the Southern California quartet likes to call themselves “rock and roll”. The band’s stripped-down organic sound is a multi-instrumental collective fronted by songwriter Robby Gira, whose staggering powerful voice creates the center of attention of their songs. The group’s instrumentation of accordion, upright bass, brushes, banjo and guitars color the emotional songs which blend and range from ballads to surf folk to soulful rockers.

Cody Lovaas   1:00 - 1:45pm

• Website

Dallas born, San Diego-raised singer-songwriter Cody Lovaas has discovered a voice and pure direction that make it hard to believe he’s not even old enough to legally drive a car. His preferred means of travel is a surfboard, which carries him through crystalline days along the Pacific Coast. Influenced by artists such as Amos Lee and Jack Johnson, 14-year-old Lovaas seamlessly combines his love for music and surf into fluid blues-imbued acoustic machinations. Also a skilled ukulele player, Lovaas is beginning to carve out the early stages of a signature sound.
